The 36 Milk Apartment is a residential building transformation project located in Sukhumvit Road 36, Bangkok, Thailand. Onion Design Studio has transformed a 30-year-old building into a new home for Butterfly Organic Milk Company. The project aims to create a space that embodies the Butterfly Company’s philosophy, as expressed by Nueng, “a place that follows the Butterfly Company’s concept from every aspect.”
During the investigation of the old residence, the designers found that the interior had undergone several renovations. Certain sections still retained their unique charm, reminding them of the building’s allure in the 1980s. Onion Design Studio recognized the importance of preserving this history while infusing it with a modern sensibility.
The design approach incorporates the local environment into every aspect of the project. The designers sketched interesting details and captured images of materials that are now difficult to find, using them as inspiration for the overall design. The designers decided to use a limited number of materials, with bathroom tiles serving as the primary design element. 12,000 bathroom tiles were meticulously rearranged to create a new, unified space, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness.
The project is a testament to Onion Design Studio’s ability to seamlessly blend historical preservation with contemporary design elements, creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The 36 Milk Apartment is a unique and inspiring example of how a building’s past can be embraced and transformed into a vibrant and innovative new space.
