28㎡ Peter Pan Apartment / Archstudio / Beijing, China

Archstudio's design for a compact apartment maximizes space and functionality.

by 24designclub

This apartment design in Beijing, China, presents a unique solution for maximizing space and functionality within a small 28-square-meter footprint. The designers at Archstudio cleverly concealed essential elements like a folding double bed, a bathroom, and a kitchen within two movable walls, ensuring a spacious living area with a minimalist aesthetic. This design embodies the essence of Peter Pan, where every inch is utilized to create a magical and practical living experience.

The design of this 28-square-meter apartment, aptly named “Peter Pan,” presented Archstudio with a unique challenge: to create a sense of spaciousness and comfort within a limited area. To achieve this, the designers strategically minimized the footprint of functional service areas, prioritizing the maximization of the main living space. This resulted in a simple and clean design, where a box-like structure, clad in decorative panels, provides a backdrop for large windows that offer stunning views of the balcony and extend the internal space outwards.

The design features two “active” walls that cleverly conceal all the furniture, including a folding double bed, sliding doors for the bathroom and kitchen, a wardrobe, and the air conditioning unit. This ingenious solution allows for flexibility and adaptability within the compact space. The living area is characterized by its white surfaces, which enhance the brightness and highlight the texture of the wooden walls. This color scheme provides a blank canvas for personalization and allows for the space to be transformed based on daily needs. The bathroom and kitchen are distinct zones painted in a singular blue hue, creating a cohesive and visually appealing contrast to the rest of the apartment.

This design approach seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics, creating a dynamic and efficient living space within a limited area. By cleverly concealing essential elements and utilizing a minimalist color scheme, Archstudio’s design for the 28㎡ Peter Pan Apartment exemplifies the potential of maximizing space and functionality in compact living.
