A 1950s Motor Lodge Transformed into a Modern Boutique Hotel

by 24designclub

The Austin Motel, originally opened in 1938, is a mid-century gem nestled in the heart of Texas’s vibrant city, nestled among vibrant South Congress Avenue bars, restaurants and shops. The hotel has recently been taken over by designer Liz Lambert, who has added it to her hospitality company Bunkhouse’s portfolio, transforming it into a boutique Austin hotel with bold colors, bold wallpapers, and vintage tools.

The Austin Motel, a vintage motor lodge first opened in 1938, has been transformed into a stylish boutique hotel. Located in the heart of Austin, Texas, it’s a mid-century gem nestled among the city’s vibrant South Congress Avenue bars, restaurants, and shops. The hotel is now part of hospitality company Bunkhouse’s portfolio, with designer Liz Lambert leading the revitalization. This transformation has breathed new life into the motel, bringing a fresh vibe with colorful furniture, bold wallpapers, and vintage accents. The company stated, “The property’s latest chapter blends its distinct Texas spirit, reflected in its original bones and iconic neon sign, with Bunkhouse’s authentic flare and unique design touch.” Landscaping was done by Mark Word Design, a new pool bar was built by Metalworkers Design Build Adventure, and custom woodworking was done by Enabler.

Each of the hotel’s 41 rooms has been remodeled and features furnishings that are in keeping with the mid-century architectural style. Bright reds, oranges, and yellows were chosen for the décor, wallpapers, and accessories, matching the iconic neon signage on the exterior. Red and white are also used for outdoor umbrellas and lounge chairs. The lobby was designed to mimic a convenience store, with coolers for drinks and snacks, and a small retail space inside selling travel essentials, souvenirs, and pool accessories.
