This 62㎡ apartment in Shanghai, China, designed by Xiaojia Design, is a stunning example of how to create a cozy haven within a small space. It features a light industrial style that combines rough textures with refined details, resulting in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The apartment is divided into five distinct zones: the public area, corridor, bedroom, bathroom, and balcony. The public area, which includes the kitchen, dining area, laundry room, and relaxation zone, utilizes affordable and readily available materials such as hard pine wood flooring, white tiles, and birch plywood. Even the dining table is made from pine furniture boards and railings, adding a touch of rustic charm.
The entrance hall and spacious foyer are separated from the living room by a concrete block partition wall. A sliding door in the living room leads to a separate, well-lit bedroom. The concrete ceiling is left exposed, only covered with a protective satin varnish. The furniture is either custom-made or produced onsite, with plywood panels below the windows serving as storage space for books, tableware, and other items. These panels also double as a decorative cover for the radiator, and the holes in them act as handles and facilitate heat circulation in the colder months.
The bedroom is characterized by a sleek, modern design. The deep green dressing table is a repurposed pine cabinet, and black-brown medical glass bottles add a touch of industrial chic. The bedside table is a repurposed steel heating stove, with integrated lighting featuring copper pipes and fittings. The bedroom also features a custom-designed bed frame and headboard, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
The bathroom is a highlight of the apartment, boasting a retro aesthetic achieved through the use of white tiles. The bathroom features a spacious shower area, a vanity unit with a large mirror, and a toilet, all designed to maximize functionality and comfort.
Overall, this 62㎡ apartment is a testament to the power of smart design and the use of readily available materials to create a stylish and functional living space. It showcases the beauty of embracing imperfections and finding unique solutions for storage and functionality, making it a perfect example of a cozy industrial style apartment.
