Project Background

The Silt Hotel, a striking new landmark on the Belgian coast, opened in the spring of 2024. It occupies the site of the former Middelkerke casino, a prominent feature of the 1980s, and now houses a new casino, hotel, restaurant, and event hall. TJIP interior architecture, a Belgian studio known for its expertise in residential, hospitality, and project development interior design, was entrusted with the interior design of the hotel’s 3,000 square meters, spanning six floors. The hotel’s design prioritizes minimalist aesthetics, allowing the natural beauty of the seaside location to take center stage, a philosophy deeply rooted in TJIP’s approach to design, particularly in their numerous weekend homes along the Belgian coast. minimalist aesthetics, Belgium, seaside retreat

Design Concept and Objectives

From the initial casco phase, TJIP meticulously defined the spatial organization and flow, developing a design concept centered around the tranquility and vastness of the sea. The hotel’s interior exudes a sense of understated luxury, sometimes bordering on a serene, almost sacred atmosphere. This is achieved through the careful selection of materials and colors that subtly mirror the surrounding environment, fostering a warm and welcoming ambiance that embraces every guest. The design philosophy of ‘let the light prevail’ is evident throughout, particularly in the bespoke lighting design, where steel and ceramic elements create a soft, inviting glow reminiscent of candlelight. minimalist aesthetics, Belgium, ocean views

Functional Layout and Spatial Planning

The Silt Hotel boasts 74 rooms and a dedicated wellness area complete with a sauna, Turkish bath, and breakfast bar, offering guests a wealth of leisure options. The hotel’s unique waterfront location allows the sea to seemingly reach the base of the building, further enhancing the connection to the surrounding environment. Every aspect of the design is thoughtfully curated to maximize the breathtaking ocean views. Whether relaxing in their rooms, enjoying a meal in the restaurant, or indulging in the wellness facilities, guests are treated to panoramic vistas of the sea. minimalist aesthetics, Belgium, seaside escape

Exterior Design and Aesthetics

The exterior design of the Silt Hotel seamlessly integrates with the coastal landscape, employing a palette of natural materials and colors that echo the surrounding dunes and sea. Large windows and expansive balconies provide unobstructed views of the ocean, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The architectural design emphasizes clean lines and minimalist forms, allowing the hotel to blend harmoniously with its environment while still making a bold statement. minimalist aesthetics, Belgium, ocean views

Social and Cultural Impact

The Silt Hotel is more than just a luxurious accommodation; it’s a destination that celebrates the unique beauty and tranquility of the Belgian coast. The hotel’s design fosters a deep connection between guests and the natural environment, encouraging them to appreciate and respect the coastal ecosystem. By revitalizing the site of the former casino, the project also contributes to the cultural landscape of Middelkerke, providing a vibrant new hub for both locals and tourists. minimalist aesthetics, Belgium, seaside retreat
