Mountain Soil Transforms a Two-Story Building into a Serene Exhibition Space with Organic Architecture and Nature-Inspired Interior Design

by 24designclub

Mountain Soil created a unique exhibition space for JIA Yuan Craft, blending nature-inspired interior design with a focus on handicrafts.

Project Background

Mountain Soil, founded in 2019 with a design philosophy rooted in nature, was commissioned by JIA Yuan in the spring of 2023. The project involved transforming an existing two-story framed structure into a living exhibition space for artifacts. JIA Yuan Craft’s emphasis on global handicrafts and the exploration of object beauty provided a unique foundation for the project. The designers aimed to create a serene environment where space, objects, and human interaction could coexist harmoniously. The goal was to provide a platform for promoting handicrafts in contemporary society while offering visitors a journey of discovery and appreciation. The project’s emphasis on nature-inspired interior design and organic architecture is evident throughout the space. The integration of nature into the built environment provides a unique context for experiencing the beauty of the space and objects within it.

Design Concept and Objectives

Inspired by the Chinese character “yuan,” meaning circle, the design unfolds as a narrative sequence: “Outdoor Garden/ Approaching Garden/ Wandering Garden/ Lingering Garden”. This concept reflects a journey of exploration and discovery, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the world of handicrafts. The design challenges the perception of the urban ground as a dead surface, instead embracing the natural life that emerges through cracks and interventions. By extracting spatial forms from everyday scenes, Mountain Soil sought to create an approachable landscape within the exhibition space. The seamless blend of organic architecture and nature-inspired interior design fosters a sense of tranquility and contemplation, making the exhibition space more than just a display area, but a living home for art and human interaction.

Spatial Layout and Planning

The exhibition space is organized around a central circular element, echoing the “yuan” concept. The layout promotes a sense of flow and movement, guiding visitors through the various exhibition areas. Natural light filters through strategically placed windows, highlighting the craftsmanship of the displayed artifacts. The use of natural materials, such as stone and wood, further enhances the connection to nature. Each space within the sequence offers a unique experience, from the initial encounter with the Outdoor Garden to the contemplative atmosphere of the Lingering Garden. The nature-inspired interior design seamlessly integrates with the architecture, blurring the boundaries between the built environment and the natural world.

Exterior Design and Aesthetics

The building’s exterior maintains a simple and understated aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the interior experience and the surrounding natural environment. The use of white brick provides a clean backdrop, while large windows offer glimpses into the exhibition space within. The integration of greenery softens the building’s edges and further connects it to the landscape. The overall design reflects a commitment to sustainable practices, with a focus on natural materials and energy efficiency. The building’s minimal aesthetic allows the beauty of the surrounding environment to shine through, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture.

Social and Cultural Impact

The JIA Yuan Craft Exhibition Space serves as a platform for promoting and celebrating global handicrafts. By creating an engaging and accessible environment, Mountain Soil has fostered a space for cultural exchange and appreciation. The exhibition space provides opportunities for visitors to learn about different craft traditions and connect with the artisans behind the objects. The project’s success lies in its ability to seamlessly integrate nature, architecture, and art, creating a unique and memorable experience for visitors. By promoting handicrafts, the project also contributes to the preservation of traditional skills and techniques.
