Early Life and Education of Wang Changxing

Wang Changxing, born in 1987, is the founder of Nong Studio. His early exposure to art came from his father, a renowned Chinese painting artist in Shanghai. After graduating from Tongji University with a degree in architecture and urban planning, he pursued further studies at Politecnico di Milano in Italy and Parsons School of Design in New York, earning a doctorate. These experiences, combined with extensive travels across six continents and over 50 countries, shaped his unique design perspective. The fusion of Eastern and Western design elements is a recurring theme in Nong Studio’s diverse interior design portfolio.

Establishment of Nong Studio and its Design Approach

Nong Studio, founded in 2016, is based in Shanghai with branches in Milan and New York. The studio’s name, “Nong,” is a playful reference to the traditional alleyways found in Shanghai, reflecting a connection to the city’s architectural heritage. Nong Studio specializes in high-end commercial spaces, residential spaces, soft furnishings, and visual communication design. Wang Changxing’s design approach involves a playful exploration of cultural influences, humor, and human-centric elements. He avoids self-imposed limitations by refusing to define a specific style. His work embodies a harmonious blend of Chinese and Western aesthetics, often drawing inspiration from Shanghai’s Art Deco past.

Notable Projects and Design Philosophy

Nong Studio’s projects range from private residences to commercial spaces. A notable example is a private residence located on the Suzhou River in Shanghai, where traditional Chinese elements, such as bird-and-flower paintings, are juxtaposed with Art Deco and Victorian furniture. This fusion creates a unique and visually engaging space. Another project is the ORO Tiramisuteca3, where the interior design evokes a sense of elegance and sophistication. Nong Studio’s design philosophy emphasizes cultural fusion, ensuring that Chinese aesthetics are not limited to a specific form, color, or expression but resonate with contemporary tastes. Their designs often incorporate elements of traditional Chinese culture, creating spaces that are both visually appealing and intellectually stimulating.

International Recognition and Future Aspirations

Nong Studio has received international acclaim, winning awards like the German Design Award, SBID, A-D, Grand Prix Design Paris, and APIDA. Their work has been featured in numerous publications, including ELLEDECOR (Italy), Perspective (Hong Kong), AD (China), FRAME (Netherlands), Kinflok, Tatler, and Interior Design (USA). Wang Changxing’s vision extends beyond creating beautiful spaces. He aims to promote Chinese design on a global stage, demonstrating the creativity and innovation of Chinese designers. He believes that it is the responsibility of contemporary designers to bridge cultures and showcase the diversity of design perspectives. His design journey is a continuous exploration of new ideas and challenges, constantly pushing boundaries and challenging conventional aesthetics.
