This unique design approach, inspired by the brand’s New York location, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, transforming the space into a series of interconnected “rooms” with distinct functions and aesthetics.
The design concept for Chikalicious Taikoo in Shanghai, China, is a seamless blend of apartment living and playful dessert shop. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s New York location, Sò studio sought to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, reminiscent of a cozy apartment. This concept is evident in the space’s layout, which features distinct “rooms” with varying functions and aesthetics, all connected by the overarching apartment theme. 
To bring this concept to life, Sò studio employed a range of design techniques, including the use of abstract sculptures to add visual interest and depth. For instance, the library space is designed with a sense of volume, inspired by the sculptural works of Rachel Whiteread. This unconventional approach adds a touch of playfulness to the space, while also emphasizing the function of books through negative space. The use of “curtain” elements adds further richness to the spatial language, transforming real-world curtains into abstract sculptures with varying concave arcs.
The design team has meticulously curated the materials and color palette to create a subtle and sophisticated atmosphere. Avoiding strong contrasts and bold colors, the team prioritizes the subtle interplay of materials, creating a sense of depth and layering. For example, the walls, ceilings, and sculptural elements are designed with a nuanced understanding of light and shadow, allowing for a subtle yet impactful visual experience. The use of sandstone in a diagonal pattern further enhances the spatial narrative and adds textural richness to each “room”.
