Aedas’s newly designed office building for Chongqing High-Tech Group Co., Ltd., located on the north side of Happiness Plaza in Chongqing’s Northern New District, is beginning to take shape. The building’s distinctive, twisting facade, inspired by the Aurora Borealis, is the world’s largest single-story twist angle in a super-tall building, exceeding the maximum single-story twisting angle of similar projects by nearly 1.5 times (CTBUH Journal, 2016 Issue 3). The building is scheduled to be completed in 2022 and will be a strong contender for the title of “world’s first twist.” With its unique double-curved facade, the building’s south and east sides are connected at the top and bottom, creating a graceful arc that is reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis, resembling a “dance of light.” The building’s form is constantly changing, providing a dynamic view from every angle. When the sun is high, the curved surface is bathed in a bright golden light, transforming the tower into a beacon of light. At night, the building’s facade reflects white light, and the curves resemble the graceful waist of a young girl dancing. The building’s twisting form creates a unique and challenging design that required the use of advanced facade technology and a deep collaboration between the architects and RFR. The building’s largest single-story twist angle reaches 8.8 degrees, nearly 1.5 times larger than the world’s largest single-story twist angle of similar projects. The project’s distinctive form and design create a strong visual presence in the city and will become a new landmark for Chongqing.
