OHANA Residence in Mexico, designed by VERTEBRAL, is a tropical modernism beach house that embraces open-air living and harmony with nature.

An Architectural Marvel in the Jungle

The OHANA Residence, a private beach house project in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence between architecture and nature. Designed by the architectural firm VERTEBRAL, the residence is strategically nestled within a low jungle of Nim trees, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape. A meandering path through the dense vegetation leads to the striking structure, characterized by a floating roof that provides shade and shelter. Its proximity to the beach creates the illusion of a ship navigating through the waves, blurring the lines between the built environment and the natural world. tropical modernism, open-air living, natural ventilation

Open-Air Living and Natural Ventilation

The residence’s design prioritizes open-air living, fostering a deep connection with the surrounding environment. The social area is a spacious elevated platform composed of interlaced stone slabs, strategically positioned to capture panoramic views and refreshing breezes. A lightweight overhang provides protection from both summer rain and winter sun, while the sloping platform and flat floor slabs create a tunnel effect, accelerating wind flow and maintaining a cool atmosphere in the coastal heat. tropical modernism, open-air living, natural ventilation

Integration with Nature

The design team, led by Elias Kalach, Teddy Nanes, and Alberto Bou, skillfully integrated the residence into its natural context. Local materials, including earth-toned finishes, were used to create a visual continuity with the vegetation. The reinforced concrete structure reflects the intention of using natural, neutral materials. Tropical wood and exposed concrete elements serve as a backdrop for the landscape and vegetation that thrive between the building, the beach, and the sea. tropical modernism, open-air living, natural ventilation

Luxury in Harmony with Nature

The essence of luxury at OHANA Residence lies in its harmonious relationship with nature. Cross-ventilation, breathtaking sea views, and the incorporation of small gardens within each room create an ambiance of tranquility and intimacy. The residence acts as a catalyst for a harmonious coexistence with the jungle, beach, and ocean, offering a unique sanctuary for its inhabitants. tropical modernism, open-air living, natural ventilation

Functional Layout and Spatial Planning

The 810 square meter residence is thoughtfully organized into eight independent volumes, strategically distributed throughout the property to define private and public zones. The layout responds to the open brief while considering the site’s landscape, orientation, and prevailing winds. This approach maximizes the potential of the 360-degree views while ensuring privacy and functionality. tropical modernism, open-air living, natural ventilation
