Urbane Kultur renovates a 1970s public swimming pool in France, preserving its unique dome structure while updating functionality and efficiency.

Background

In the 1970s, France saw the construction of 183 “Tournesol” swimming pools, designed by architect Bernard Schoeller. These structures were renowned for their innovative design, featuring a distinctive dome-shaped roof that could be opened and closed. The Lingolsheim “Tournesol” swimming pool, like many others, had aged and required modernization to meet contemporary needs and standards. The challenge for Urbane Kultur was to revitalize this iconic structure while respecting its original design and character.

Design Concept and Objectives

The architects at Urbane Kultur approached the “Tournesol” Swimming Pool Refurbishment with a focus on preserving the building’s unique identity while enhancing its functionality and spatial qualities. The primary objectives were to improve natural lighting, upgrade the structural framework, and create a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. By stripping away previous extensions and repositioning the changing rooms, the architects created an open plan that maximized the use of space and emphasized the dome’s elegant form.

Layout and Spatial Planning

A new building houses the entrance, changing rooms, offices, and technical areas. It is strategically positioned away from the main pool hall, encircling the dome in a figure-eight formation without impinging on its structure. This separation of functions creates a clear circulation path and allows for a landscaped patio between the new building and the pool hall. The patio serves as a transitional space and provides visual connections between the different areas, enhancing the overall user experience. Large sliding doors further connect the interior with the exterior, blurring the boundaries and creating a sense of openness.

Exterior Design and Aesthetics

The exterior design of the “Tournesol” Swimming Pool Refurbishment maintains the original dome structure, which is a defining feature of these iconic buildings. The dome’s unique form allows for ample natural light to flood the interior, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The new extension complements the dome with a contemporary design that incorporates smooth steel elements and large glass windows, ensuring a harmonious blend of old and new.

Technical Details and Sustainability

The refurbishment involved significant technical upgrades to ensure the building’s long-term sustainability and efficiency. These upgrades included improvements to the pool’s mechanical systems, insulation, and ventilation, reducing energy consumption and operating costs. The use of durable materials, such as steel and glass, also contributes to the building’s longevity and minimizes maintenance requirements.
