A School Inspired by Nature, AG & Co. Revitalizes a Brick School in Shenzhen with a Biophilic Design and a Serpentine 'Blue Mountain Corridor'

by 24designclub

The Victoria Park Academy, the first branch of the Hong Kong Victoria Education Group in Shenzhen, is situated at the northern foot of Da Nanshan Mountain in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The campus is a serene haven for students, with stunning views of Liling Park and Da Nanshan Mountain. The school features a football field, basketball court, tennis court, track and field, and a running track, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The original building comprised two red brick gymnasiums, which AG & Co. retained in their design, preserving the elegant sloping roof form. This new school design aims to provide a stimulating environment that fosters students’ self-awareness, encourages social interaction and collaboration, and creates a seamless connection with the natural world. This school design strategy seeks to establish an interactive space, where students can feel inspired and engaged, whether they are in the classroom or outdoors.

AG & Co. created a “Blue Mountain Corridor” that serves as a unifying thread throughout the interior, much like a river of knowledge that flows without interruption. It connects three core areas, encompassing a grand stairway, a multi-functional hall for workshops, and a central courtyard, featuring a playful and organic design that celebrates nature, openness, and humanity. The dynamic corridor, characterized by its cascading form, weaves through the building, seamlessly integrating the various functions and creating a sense of unity. The school’s design seamlessly blends the natural world, with a fluid transition from the surrounding mountains, drawing on the colors and textures of nature, and embracing the changing seasons. The corridor is inspired by the rhythm and fluidity of water, reflecting the life-giving essence of nature.

The “Blue Mountain Corridor” acts as a unifying thread, connecting the building’s various spaces. The design of the building is based on the idea of creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces. It is designed to embrace the natural elements and integrate them into the school’s architecture, creating a feeling of openness and connection. The school’s interior spaces are designed to be bright and airy, with plenty of natural light and ventilation. The school also features a number of outdoor spaces that are designed to encourage interaction and collaboration. The school’s design creates a feeling of community, with a focus on collaboration and creativity. The design also promotes a sense of well-being and connection with nature.
To ensure the project’s success, AG & Co. designed the building to be both efficient and sustainable. They created a unique indoor environment that encourages learning and exploration by incorporating natural elements and sustainable design principles. The designers implemented smart and innovative solutions to create a school where students can thrive and grow. The new Victoria Park Academy is a testament to the power of design to create a vibrant learning environment.
