6WEI Space Cafe/Daxia Architecture Studio/Shizhu, Chongqing

A space where people connect with the city, its history, and their future.

by 24designclub

6WEI Space, nestled in the New World area at the foot of Qishan Mountain by the river, is more than just a cafe; it’s a reflection of the city’s soul. Inspired by the relationship between the urban landscape and Qishan Mountain, the design evokes the feeling of strolling along the riverbank, where people reconnect with the city’s charm. The concept is rooted in the interplay of “facing” and “gazing,” a sense of mutual connection across distances and heights. A city facade, a tiered bookshelf, a modern cantilevered loft, and a bridge of memories come together to create a multi-dimensional spatial experience that seamlessly blends indoors and outdoors. This space transcends its functional purpose, becoming a place where stories unfold. The tiered bookshelf, reminiscent of the terraced slopes at the foot of the mountain, provides a platform for people to gather, read, drink, chat, and enjoy music or participate in social gatherings. The space’s spatial order is organized around a “three-part” principle: “one part” fully open, “two parts” juxtaposing real and virtual elements, and “three parts” facing each other. The design creates a sense of gradual openness, transitioning from a dense, compact atmosphere to a spacious, liberating one. At the heart of this transformation lies a functional walkway, a bridge of emotions connecting the entire space and serving as its main axis. This walkway echoes the memory of a nearby, now-vanished, old suspension bridge, igniting a sense of nostalgia. Its strong ritualistic and spiritual quality has made it the focal point of the space, a stage for fashion shows, salons, speeches, and musical performances. For the local Tujia people, who constitute 90% of the population and have been deeply influenced by Han culture, this walkway symbolizes their growth trajectory, a path that leads towards the glass facade and a world of life, work, and the sky. When longing for their land and hometown, they can turn back and see a cantilevered loft, a symbol of their Tujia heritage. This loft, transformed through tradition and time, stands as a testament to their heritage, a beacon of hope as they look back at the past. 6WEI Space embodies the essence of a city and its people, offering a sense of belonging and a haven where memories and aspirations converge.
