Music Conservatory Hotel / Piero Lissoni / Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Music Conservatory Hotel in Amsterdam by Piero Lissoni, located in a century-old building designed by Dutch architect Daniel Knuttel, reimagines the classic English garden through a glass atrium.

The Music Conservatory Hotel, designed by Piero Lissoni in Amsterdam, is housed in a century-old building designed by Dutch architect Daniel Knuttel. Lissoni creatively crafted 129 rooms within the original footprint, each with a unique layout, and built a 20-meter-high glass atrium in the front courtyard, all under strict preservation regulations. The lobby and bistro are covered by a fiberglass roof, creating a bright atrium that reimagines the classic English garden and serves as a “dual life” of indoor and outdoor spaces. Many of the furnishings are by Lissoni himself, mixed with design pieces and objets trouvés. A sculptural steel staircase connects the lobby to the rest of the hotel, creating a stylish transition.

Lissoni’s design ingeniously addresses the hotel’s limitations, preserving the historic character while creating a modern and stylish atmosphere.

The glass atrium is a defining feature of the hotel, bringing natural light into the interior and creating a sense of space and openness. The atrium is described as a “dual life” of indoor and outdoor spaces, reimagining the classic English garden. The lobby and bistro are located on the ground floor and are covered by a fiberglass roof, adding to the airy and welcoming ambiance.

Many of the furnishings are by Lissoni himself, mixed with design pieces and objets trouvés, reflecting a curated and eclectic aesthetic. The sculptural steel staircase connects the lobby to the rest of the hotel, creating a stylish transition and further enhancing the sense of contemporary design. The Music Conservatory Hotel is a testament to Lissoni’s ability to seamlessly blend contemporary design with the preservation of historic architecture, creating a unique and unforgettable guest experience.
