Project Background: Beachouse Ibiza, a Mediterranean Oasis

Beachouse Ibiza, a 10-year-old beach club located on the enchanting coast of Ibiza, Spain, underwent a comprehensive renovation and restaurant redesign led by renowned Berlin-based architect Annabell Kutucu. Ibiza, a renowned Spanish holiday destination, boasts a striking Mediterranean landscape and natural climate within its 572.56 square kilometer area. Beachouse Ibiza’s revitalization sought to enhance the club’s offerings and provide a more immersive experience for visitors, catering to their desire for a relaxing and enjoyable seaside getaway.

Design Concept: Harmony between Architecture and Nature

A key design objective was to foster a harmonious connection between the architecture, the natural environment, and the human experience. Annabell Kutucu, inspired by the rustic charm of Ibiza, aimed to explore the interplay of human activity, architectural form, and the island’s distinctive landscape. The design emphasizes the concept of ‘architecture and the earth and sky as one’ as highlighted in Peter Zumthor’s ‘Atmospheres,’ seeking to reveal the inherent character of the architecture within its surroundings. This approach extends beyond mere aesthetics, exploring the essence of architecture and its ability to inspire a deeper connection to the space and environment.

Spatial Layout and Design: Openness and Integration

The design’s commitment to merging interior and exterior spaces is evident in the open structure and layout of Beachouse Ibiza. The architectural facade opens to embrace the natural surroundings, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces, and welcoming scenic views. This integration is further emphasized through the use of natural materials, such as thatch roofs and exposed wood, which create a warm and inviting ambiance reminiscent of the island’s indigenous style. Throughout the restaurant, the integration of natural elements, paired with a curated selection of rustic furniture and decor, evokes a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

Aesthetics and Material Palette: Embrace of the Rustic and Organic

The aesthetic of Beachouse Ibiza reflects the island’s innate sense of rusticity and relaxation. The materials employed underscore this aesthetic—natural textures, including raw wood and linen, are key components of the design. Annabell Kutucu’s distinctive approach to design is evident in the careful selection and incorporation of organic materials, like hemp and coarse textiles, which complement the modern accents found within the space. This combination of traditional crafts and organic elements fosters a welcoming environment that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape. The natural materials and their tactile textures add to the tactile experience of the space, fostering a sense of connection to the environment.

Culinary Experience: Freshness and Local Ingredients

The Beachouse Ibiza experience extends beyond the design itself. The culinary focus prioritizes using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients to enhance the dining experience. The restaurant incorporates traditional techniques, such as chargrilling, curing, and fermenting over Ibiza’s unique charcoal, thereby highlighting the quality of the food. This commitment to locally-sourced ingredients underscores the restaurant’s connection to the natural environment and its unique culinary identity. The natural flavors are enhanced by the rustic and earthy atmosphere, creating a multi-sensory dining experience that is both satisfying and memorable.
