The Evolution of Spa and Wellness Architecture
The concept of spas, rooted in ancient Roman times, has evolved significantly. From its origins meaning “water cure” in Latin, spas have transitioned from reliance on natural resources to incorporate diverse functionalities and modern facilities. This evolution is driven by the growing trend of sustainable living and wellness architecture, which seeks to create spaces that promote physical and mental well-being.
Ember Bath House: A Sanctuary of Tranquility in Perth’s CBD
Nestled within a concrete warehouse in Perth’s central business district, Ember Bath House is a day spa designed by Studio Traces. The space embraces a raw, modern material palette, echoing the warehouse’s industrial character. It offers a multi-sensory experience, drawing inspiration from Japanese onsen, Finnish saunas, and Turkish baths. This fusion of diverse spa traditions allows visitors to escape the urban hustle and find inner peace.
Materiality and Emotional Resonance in Design
Studio Traces meticulously crafted the space by combining materiality with emotional resonance. The architects skillfully employed contrasting light and shadow to establish visual connections within the spa. They collaborated with local artisans to incorporate handcrafted basins and treated stone, adding a layer of artistry to the environment. This thoughtful approach to material selection and craftsmanship enhances the spa’s tactile and aesthetic appeal.
Santa Teresa 58: An Urban Oasis Inspired by Ancient Roman Baths
In the heart of Naples’ historic center, Santa Teresa 58 stands as an urban oasis. Inspired by ancient Roman bathhouses, this wellness retreat features arched ceilings and a clever use of natural light, evoking a sense of historical grandeur. Designed by primo atelier, it seamlessly integrates modern amenities while maintaining a timeless and serene atmosphere.
KLEÏ Spa – Hammam: Embracing Organic Forms and Natural Materials
KLEÏ Spa – Hammam, a women’s spa in Dubai’s Mirdiff residential area, is a testament to the beauty of natural materials. VSHD Design Dubai used clay as the primary building material, shaping it into organic curves that mimic the undulating forms of a cave. This design choice fosters a sense of tranquility and connection to nature.
Alba Thermal Springs – Spa: Integrating Minimalism and the Landscape
Responding to the natural landscape and topography of the Mornington Peninsula, Hayball designed Alba Thermal Springs – Spa with a minimalist aesthetic. The building’s exterior is clad in robust concrete, complemented by glass and metal accents, creating a harmonious balance between the built environment and nature.
Curves and Circular Motifs: A Recurring Theme in Design
Curves and circular motifs are central to Alba Thermal Springs’ design language. From the spiral staircase and circular skylights to the hand-crafted tiled feature walls and landscape-integrated circular spa pools, these elements create a cohesive visual narrative. Hayball’s meticulous planning of spatial sequences and light effects underscores the spa’s commitment to health and sustainability, revitalizing the site.
