MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, has completed the Huangshan Taiping Lake Apartments, a stunning residential complex nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Huangshan, China. This project, part of a larger masterplan for the Taiping Lake tourist area, embodies MAD’s ‘Mountain City’ design philosophy, seamlessly integrating architecture with the natural environment.
The apartments, which rise gently from the hillside overlooking the serene Taiping Lake, are arranged in a cluster of ten buildings of varying heights. This staggered configuration echoes the natural topography, creating a sense of harmonious coexistence between the built environment and its surroundings. The buildings’ unique, flowing facades, inspired by the undulating contours of the nearby mountains, are a testament to MAD’s commitment to creating architecture that resonates with the spirit of its location.
The design prioritizes natural light and views, with each apartment offering expansive balconies that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. These balconies are sculpted to follow the natural topography of the hillside, resulting in a unique and organic design that seamlessly integrates with the landscape. The apartments are connected by a network of walkways and paths, encouraging residents to explore the natural beauty of their surroundings, and offer residents a sense of connection to the surrounding nature.
