Revitalizing a Neglected Waterway
The Liangma River, historically a vital part of Beijing’s landscape, had fallen into disrepair. AECOM’s urban design project aimed to transform the neglected waterway into a vibrant public space that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding urban fabric. The project involved the restoration of the river’s ecosystem, the creation of a dynamic waterfront landscape corridor, and the enhancement of public access and amenities.
Design Concept and Objectives
Guided by the principles of ‘Creating a seamless integration of buildings, green spaces, and water,’ AECOM’s design sought to reconnect the city with its waterfront. The team prioritized the needs of residents and businesses, breaking down barriers between the river and its surroundings. The project’s objectives included improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity, providing recreational opportunities, and promoting economic development.
Waterfront for Leisure and Relaxation
This section of the Liangma River waterfront, stretching from Xiangheyuan Road to Xindong Road, focuses on providing spaces for community use and recreation. Key features include integrated water management facilities, a revitalized Garden of Harmony and Enchantment, and a clearwater walkway offering close-up views of the river. These design elements cater to residents of all ages, promoting relaxation and engagement with the natural environment.
Waterfront for Cross-Culture Communication
Spanning from Xindong Road to Maizidian Street, this section is characterized by its proximity to international hotels, shopping centers, and the diplomatic district. AECOM’s design creates a visually open connection between the commercial areas and the river, fostering a harmonious blend of urban activity and natural beauty. The south bank features a serene Belt and Road themed ecological art park, offering a contrasting experience to the bustling north bank.
Waterfront for Commercial Vitality
Adjacent to the Blue Harbor business district and Chaoyang Park, this section of the waterfront addresses the challenges of limited space and mixed pedestrian and vehicular traffic with an innovative double-layer design. The lower level provides pedestrian access to the water’s edge, while the upper level seamlessly integrates with surrounding businesses, blurring the lines between commercial activity and public space. Observation platforms offer panoramic views and enhance the pedestrian experience.
Waterfront for Natural Ecology
From Anjiayuan Road to Dongsihuan North Road, this section focuses on ecological restoration and enhancement. AECOM’s design incorporates a winding water system with native aquatic plants to purify the water and create a vibrant habitat for wildlife. The revitalized entrance plaza at Chaoyang Park seamlessly connects the park with the riverfront, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Ecological Water Management Strategies
AECOM employed a holistic approach to water management, integrating water resources, safety, ecology, and landscape considerations. The project included measures to restore the river’s natural flow, improve water quality, and enhance biodiversity. By incorporating aeration systems, waterfall features, and ecological engineering solutions, the team created a self-sustaining ecosystem that benefits both people and wildlife.
Community Engagement and Collaboration
Recognizing the importance of community involvement, AECOM actively engaged with businesses, residents, and local authorities throughout the project. This collaborative approach ensured that the design responded to the needs of all stakeholders and fostered a sense of shared ownership. By working together, the team successfully integrated the waterfront with surrounding businesses, transforming the area into a thriving hub of activity.
A New Landmark for Beijing
The revitalized Liangma River waterfront has become a symbol of urban renewal and sustainable development in Beijing. By integrating nature, culture, and commerce, the project has created a dynamic public space that enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The project’s success demonstrates the transformative power of landscape architecture and urban design in shaping vibrant and resilient cities.
