Jinshanling Valley Hot Spring and Lanshan Hotel Lobby: A Harmonious Blend of Tranquility and Architectural Design in Chengde, China

by 24designclub

PLAT ASIA designed the Jinshanling Valley Hot Spring and Lanshan Hotel Lobby in Chengde, China, creating a unique mountain resort experience with a focus on architectural design.

Project Background

The Jinshanling Valley Hot Spring and Lanshan Hotel are located within the Anaya Jinshanling community in Chengde, China. The hotel serves as a major accommodation for both domestic and international travelers, while the hot spring and lobby areas offer a distinctive mountain resort experience. Architect Zheng Dongxian led the design team at PLAT ASIA, overseeing the exterior facade, interior spaces, and interior landscaping of the project.

Design Concept and Objectives

The design concept was inspired by the traditional pavilions depicted in Chinese landscape paintings. Architect Zheng Dongxian sought to create a space that embodies the essence of Eastern aesthetics, emphasizing simplicity and harmony with nature. The design team aimed to create two distinct atmospheres: a dynamic and open space for the lobby and dining areas, and a tranquil and private space for the hot spring area.

Functional Layout and Spatial Planning

The lobby and dining areas feature a series of five interconnected pavilions with varying heights, creating a sense of openness and fluidity. The pavilions’ eaves extend beyond the glass curtain walls, providing shade for outdoor seating areas and blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The hot spring area is organized around seven pavilions of different widths, housing women’s and men’s public hot springs, a reception area, and four independent private hot springs. The pavilions’ roofs extend outwards, culminating in a landscaped area with rocks and a translucent wooden grille that ensures privacy while allowing natural light to filter through.

Exterior Design and Aesthetics

The exterior of the hot spring area is characterized by a combination of materials, including grooved stone, Ant-patterned volcanic rock, and bamboo wood. Stone walkways extend from the outside into the interior, further blurring the distinction between the two. The hotel lobby features large wooden surfaces with a rough texture, balanced by the warmth of the wood’s color. The use of natural materials and the integration of landscape elements create a sense of harmony with the surrounding environment.

Interior Design and Ambiance

The interior design of the lobby and dining areas emphasizes brightness and warmth, achieved through the use of light-colored materials and a minimalist aesthetic. The hot spring area, on the other hand, features darker tones and rough textures, creating a sense of intimacy and tranquility. The use of natural light and the integration of landscape elements further enhance the relaxing atmosphere of the hot spring area.

Construction and Management

The construction of the project took place between February and October 2023. The design team collaborated closely with the construction team to ensure the accurate implementation of the design vision. The project was completed on schedule and within budget, reflecting the effective management and coordination between the design and construction teams.
